Up to now, PKP Intercity rented locomotives from third parties for the non – electrified lines. The project to purchase 10 new vehicles and to carriy out modernization of another 20 will primarily improve traveling conditions , considering efficient heating and air conditioning systems installed. “Modern locomotives will also improve working conditions of drivers and reduce our costs” says Paul Hordyriski, member of the board of PKP Intercity Chief Financial Officer.
Starting with October 2015, the new locomotives will run on the non electrified lines (Ełk – Korsze, Ełk – Olecko – Suwałki, Rzeszów – Zamość, Rzeszów – Zagórz, Krzyż – Gorzów Wlkp. – Kostrzyn, Piła – Krzyż). Vehicles will have available declarations of conformity of the rolling stock of existing environmental standards and safety and meet the requirements specified in the specifications of the TSI (Technical Specifications for Interoperability for the railroad). New rolling stock will be adapted to the speed 140 km/h.
To finance the the project, PKP Intercity applied for EU funds – under the Operational Programme Infrastructure and Environment 2007-2013 (OPI). The project has received support in the amount of 67.2 million zł.
