Astana’s light rail system will enter operation in August 2018. Currently, construction works are carried out at 8 out of 18 stations planned, stated for KazakhTv, Aitkazy Arykbaev, Technical Director of Astana LRT LLP, the project authority.
“Modern technology will be used. For passengers’ comfort, the trams will be equipped with air conditioning, video cameras, fire safety equipment; everything will be done in compliance with international standards. All stations are fitted with escalators and lifts”, said Arykbaev. In addition, the design of the rolling stock has been approved and assembling is taking place.
The 22.5 km-long route LRT will connect Astana airport, the EXPO town, Abu Dhabi Plaza and the new railway station. The line will be served by 19 tramways, with an average speed of 40 km/h.
In 2015, the Akimat of Astana, represented by Astana LRT LLP, signed a Framework Agreement on implementation of New Transport System of Astana, LRT – 1st phase with a Chinese Consortium formed of China Railway International Group Ltd and Beijing State-Owned Assets Management Co., Ltd.
