Romanian rolling stock manufacturer Astra Calatori has established new passenger train operator to provide services on the Romanian Railway market, following an investment of EUR 20 million. Astra Trans Carpatic was granted operating licence in December last year and is expected to launch services in mid-January on Bucuresti-Arad route.
The rail operator will introduce a new train manufactured by Astra Calatori, branded Transcarpatic. “The train, a concept developed by the company, offers special conditions compared to what we now have in the country. The sleeping coaches are equipped with showers, and the transport conditions are similar to the ones in airplanes, meaning that in 1st class we serve free of charge sandwiches and coffee. The train will also have attendants”, said Valer Blidar, the majority shareholder of Astra group of companies for the local press.
Astra Trans Carpatic plans to also launch operations on Arad-Constanţa, Timişoara-Baia Mare routes, and on Timişoara-Viena (Austria) .
Astra Trans Carpatic is the tenth rail passenger operator on the Romanian rail market, currently dominated by CFR Calatori, the state-owned rail passenger operator, with a 82% market share.
