Belarusian Railways to develop cooperation with China in container shipping

Belarusian Railways plan to cooperate with China in container shipping, head of the shipping service of the Belarusian Railways Ivan Voitekhovich declared.

In May 2013 the Electronic Train project was launched in cooperation with the Coordinating Council on Transsiberian Transportation to demonstrate Chinese freighters the advantages of regular container train shipping. The train plies between Chengdu (China) and Lodz (Poland). In August a new container train was launched from China to Germany (Zhengzhou-Hamburg). “In March 2014 two additional experimental container trains were launched from China. The latter showed great results: 13 hours from the border with Russia to the border with Poland taking into account all border and customs operations,” Ivan Voitekhovich said.

The head of the shipping service stressed that the issues related to the containerization of international freight traffic, organization and its further development receive special attention in the activity of the Belarusian Railways. Today 18 container trains make a regular use of the Belarusian railway. The Baltic Wind container train started plying between Lithuania and Kazakhstan in September 2013. The Mercury train resumed its operation from Lithuania to Russia. The Turkish association of logistics firms BALO joined as an operator of the Viking train.

“The Belarusian railway has a huge potential for container shipping development,” Ivan Voitekhovich  added.
