Bulgaria plans to connect Sarafo Airport to Burgas and Sunny Beach resort, on the Black Sea. The financial analysis of the infrastructure project which includes the construction of a new railway line is currently undergoing. “We discussed together with the Mayor of the city Dimitar Nikolov the design of the railway connection to Sunny Beach. Within a month the project will be ready and in case the financing is provided, we shall launch it. Thus, will be significantly reduced traffic to the resort, which is very intense in the summer”, stated Transport Minister Ivailo Moskovski during the opening ceremony of the renovated Burgas railway station.
Sarafo Airport, located 10 km north-east of Burgas, to Sunny Beach rail link will be part of part of Burgas’ urban railway development project, included in Sofia-Burgas railway line modernisation (phase II) and financed under the Operational Programme on Transport 2014-2020 (OPT). The distance from Sarafovo Airport, to Sunny Beach is 25 km. The construction of the rail link is estimated at about LEV 100 million (EUR 51 million).
According to Hristo Alexiev, Deputy Director General of the Bulgarian National railway infrastructure company (NRIC), the project should be of interest to private investors, private rail operators, considering that traffic will be at peaks only during summer tourist period. The air-rail link could be developed under Bulgaria’s first public-private partnership (PPP) railway infrastructure project.
