Czech railway companies sign memorandum on improving Prague – Munich railway line

Czech state-owned railway operator issues bonds worth over EUR 115.2 m to repay old debtsCzech Railway Infrastructure Administration (SŽDC)Czech Railways (ČD) and ČD Cargo have signed a memorandum of understanding on cooperation for the fundamental improvement of the railway line connecting Prague to Munich. Currently, it takes six hours by train to make the trip from Prague to Munich. The modernisation of both German and Czech rail segments could shorten journey times to just four and a half hours.

For Czech Railways the international transport segment is developing and is generating revenue. The national rail operator, in cooperation with DB, will focused on the quality of services and connections between Prague, Berlin and Hamburg, as well as on Prague – Munich and international routes. This project should also enter among the priorities of the German Federal Transport Infrastructure Plan (Bundesverkehrswegeplan).

“Our organization has in plan to improve parameters of the Czech rail section and is clearly important that the German side should also push for the modernization of connecting lines from the Czech Republic to Munich. Today’s initiative is confirming that the agreement between the Prime Minister of the Czech Republic and Chancellor Merkel, as well as the agreement of Transport Ministers to improve rail links is taken seriously, ” said Pavel Surý, CEO of the SŽDC.
