Czech Railways purchase 14 EMUs from Škoda Transportation

Czech Railways (ČD) and Škoda Transportation signed a CZK 2.6 billion (EUR 96 million) contract for the supply of 14 electric multiple-units, based on the RegioPanter concept lineThe units will be manufactured between 2015 and 2016 and will be operated on long-distance routes. The acquisition of new EMUs is related to the preparation for the opening of the long-distance passenger rail services market and the phasing out of obsolete express trains and coaches from the former GDR.

Michal Štěpán, ČD member of the Board responsible for passenger transport stated that passengers will enjoy a modern and air-conditioned interior. Among other benefits of the new EMUs he listed the low-floor, allowing for convenient access and egress for wheel-chair users, mothers pushing prams, also for persons with reduced mobility, including the elderly; modern LCD display system and WiFi internet access; 230 V at-seat sockets; more comfortable seats.
