Russian Railways subsidiary RZD International has signed a contract worth EUR 1.2 bn with Iranian Islamic Republic Railways (RAI) to electrify the Garmsar – Ince Burun railway line, which connects  north-central Iran to the northeastern border with Turkmenistan. The project will be financed by the state export credit of the Russian government to Iran.

RZD International will design, supply equipment and materials and will carry out the electrification of the 495 km long railway line (of which  203 km on mountainous terrain), which includes 32 stations and 95 tunnels.

“The implementation of the contract will improve the capacity of passenger trains and increase freight transit to 8 million tons,” said RAI Managing Director Mohsen Poursaeed-Aqaei who signed the document (PressTV Iran).

According to preliminary estimations, the project will be completed in 3 years.
