The European Commision approved on July 12 the modification of the main project „Metro line 5, section Raul Doamnei- Eroilor (PS Opera), including Valea Ialomitei”. The decision endorses dividing the project in two phases, the first one being included in 2007-2013 financing period, while the second phase will be financed under 2014-2020 period.
As a result of EU’s decision, the first phase has an eligible value of almost EUR 200 million, out of which approximately 170 million represent the co-financing from EU under the European Fund for regional development. The total value of the project is EUR 480 million.
“The construction of Metro Line 5 is a project of high importance for Bucharest citizens because it will shorten journey times time between Drumul Taberei and Eroilor zone with approximately 20 minutes. It is estimated that more than half of the 335000 residents of Drumul Taberei and adjacent areas will make use of the future metro line, ” said Corina Cretu, the European commissioner for regional policy.
Bucharest metro line 5 will have a total length of 6.7 km, 10 stations and a rolling stock depot situated at Valaea Ialomitei station. The estimated date for the completition of the entire project is December 31, 2017. The main project is part of the operational program „Transport”, primary axe 2 ‘The modernization and development of national transport infrastructure aiming to develop a new durable transport system’.
