EUR 89 million infrastructure project to improve Bucharest air-rail link connection

14657347_1352489261452605_6225017388906201020_nRomanian Minister of Transport Sorin Buse and representatives of the state-owned rail infrastructure manager CFR SA and rail passenger operator CFR Calatori  have presented a EUR 89 million project for the development of the railway connection between Bucharest North Railway station and Bucharest  International Airport Henri Coanda (Otopeni).

According to the project, CFR will carry out electrification and rehabilitation works on the existing 17 km long railway line to Odai railway station, in Otopeni city. In addition, a new 2.3 km rail segment, a temporary railway station and a moving walkway to the airport will be built. Passengers will be able to get from Bucharest North Railway station to the airport in just 18 minutes, said transport minister Buse.

This represents the first phase of the Bucharest air-rail link project and will be implemented between October 2016 and April 2018.  Financing will be provided from EU and the state budget. 

The second phase is represented by the construction  of an underground multimodal terminal by 2020.
