First Chinese EMU manufactured for Macedonian Railways presented

The first of six multiple units (MU) manufactured for Macedonian Railways by Zhuzhou Electric Locomotive, CRRC subsidiary, was presented on the 7th of July. At the unveiling ceremony that took place at Zhuzhou, Hunan province, were present a Macedonian delegation led by Minister of Transport and Communications Vlado Misajlovski and CRRC vice-president Lou Qiliang.

In June 2014, the Government of FYR Macedonia and former China South Locomotive & Rolling Stock Corporation (CSR) signed a contract for the delivery of 6 new MUs (4 DMU and 2 EMU). It is CSR’s first sale in Europe and Macedonia’s first investment in rolling stock in 35 years.

The first unit will be delivered this summer. The 140km/h low-floor EMUs can carry up to 1200 passengers. The trains feature air-conditioning, vacuum toilet systems, energy efficient systems and facilitates access for passenger with reduced mobility.

For the MU project, Macedonian Railways has allocated EUR 25 million, out of a EUR 50 million EBRD loan, including also the rehabilitation of three electric locomotives (10 million) and the acquisition of up to 150 new freight wagons  (EUR 15 million).
