SBB Cargo and AlpTransit Gotthard tested a first freight train through the Gotthard Base Tunnel on January 16. Trials focused in particular on the dynamic behaviour of the loaded wagons, which also including two rolling motorway lorry-carrying vehicles.

Three runs were carried out, from Altdorf to Biasca, and from Biasca to Rynächt. In the following weeks, SBB Cargo will carry out additional runs in order to test vehicle dynamics and run-times for wagons, and as well as the suitability of the locomotives operated on the north-south axis.

As part of the AlpTransit Gotthard’s test phase, which started on 1st of October 2015 and is expected to last until the end of May this year, around 3 500 test runs will be performed.
