Locomotive kurastyru zauyty (LKZ), a joint venture of Kazakhstan Railways (KTZ) and Transmashholding, has delivered the first of 10 Type TE33A Evolution diesel locomotives ordered by Azerbaijan Railways. The hand-over ceremony took place on the 3rd of August 3, in Baku and also included the the arrival of the first Nomad Express container train from China.
President of Kazakhstan Railways, Askar Mamin stressed that Kazakhstan is a reliable supplier of railway products to Azerbaijan, with USD 350 million worth contracts including locomotives, turnouts and other type products.
The Nomad Express container train connecting China, Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan via rail and the new Alat port (60 km form Baku) covered 3500 km across Kazakhstan and the Caspian Sea (by ferry) in just five days.
The Trans-Caspian route was launched in the framework of the economic policy “Nurly Zhol” and the “New Silk Road”. Its potential for container traffic volume is estimated to increase to more than 300000 TEUs by 2020.
