Bulgaria’s Council of Ministers granted consent for the signing of an agreement between the Managing Authority of OP Transport and Transport Infrastructure 2014-2020 with Metropolitan AD, Sofia’s metro operator, on preliminary financing for the first stage of the project for extension of the metro network from Vladimir Vazov Boulevard to Zhitnitsa Street.
The first stage of third metro line has a length of 7.8 kilometres and covers 8 metro stations. The project also includes the delivery of rolling stock and the construction of a depot close to Zhitnitsa Street.
The project is financed under the operational programme and will be launched before being officially approved by the European Commission (Focus net).
Sofia metro and light metro projects tops the list of infrastructure priorities of the Bulgarian government for 2014 -2020. The other projects are:
– Construction of the third metro diameter of Sofia Metro Vladimir Vazov Blvd.-Central Urban Area-Ovcha Kupel Residential Area – 7.8 km metro line and 8 stations
– Extension of the second metro diameter from metro station James Bouchier МС II-11 to Cherni vruh and Hanrik Ibsen MS II-12– construction of 1.3 km metro line and 1 metro station
