Frecciargento high-speed trains will connect Rome’s Leonardo da Vinci – Fiumicino international airport with Venice, Padua, Bologna and Florence, announced Michele Mario Elia, CEO of Italy’s Ferrovie dello Stato (FS). In addition, a new high-speed service from the airport to central Rome will begin operations on 14th of December.
By the end of the year, infrastructure manager Rete Ferroviaria Italiana (RFI) is expected to submit a feasibility study on the infrastructural development works needed to link the airport to the AV system.
These are the first two steps taken towards the implementation of the memorandum of understanding between the Ministry of Infrastructure & Transports and FS in regarding new infrastructure solutions for connecting Roma-Fiumicino, Milano-Malpensa and Venezia-Tessera Marco Polo national airports to the high speed network (Alta Velocità, AV).
He also announced that the privatization of the state-owned railway company should be completed by the first half of 2016.
