Huawei and Bombardier Transportation have successfully demonstrated integrated rail security solutions on a rail test track in Zmigrod, Poland. The rail security solutions demonstrated combines broadband data capabilities of Huawei eLTE wireless rail communication system with Bombardier’s on-board rail security portfolio and wireless gateway solution.
The end to end solution demonstrated on the rail test track in Zmigrod included on-board security functionality such as Video Surveillance CCTV, environmental sensors for detection of gas and radiation levels as well as advanced Passenger Information Systems, PIS. The situations replicated a typical rail environment and day to day railway operational situations such as intruder detection, unattended luggage as well as CBRNE (Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear Explosives) detection. These scenarios were presented to a large number of European Commission representatives, partners and railway stakeholders as well as representatives of transport authorities and rail police.
The communication scenarios presented at the event in Zmigrod demonstrated how Bombardier’s on board communications gateway within train stations preferred available Wi-Fi network coverage to maximize the benefit from unlicensed Wi-Fi frequencies and once the train started moving with higher speeds automatically switches over to 3G for transmission of critical data. As soon the train entered LTE wireless coverage the on board unit then automatically enabled data services such as video surveillance and broadband data to maximize the benefits delivered by LTE for rail.
