Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality has awarded Hyundai Rotem a USD 316 million contract to supply 300 driverless metro cars, the Korean company announced on April 25. The four-car train sets will enter service on future Line M7, connecting Kabataş and Mahmutbey (18km).
Production will be carried out in Turkey and deliveries are scheduled for completion by April 2021.
Turkey is currently Hyundai Rotem’s second-largest export market (after India), with a total of 1778 rolling stock units being sold since 1996. With this latest deal, Hyundai Rotem’s cumulative contracts have surpassed 1 trillion won. In January, the company won a 530 billion won contract to build a subway system in the Philippines, followed by a 187 billion won rolling stock maintenance contract in New Zealand.
