Lithuania launches Rail Baltica II project implementation 

rail-baltica-2Lithuania has successfully completed phase I of Rail Baltica project implementation and is the first of the three Baltic states to launch the second phase of the project, informs Lithuania’s  Deputy Minister of TransportSaulius Girdauskas. Lithuanian Railways’s Board of Directors has approved the start of works for 5 km long Jiesia–Rokai rail section.

In November a tender for Rokai–Palemonas–Kaunas rail infrastructure reconstruction works will be announced. The value of infrastructure works is estimated at EUR 88 million, 85% financed under the Connecting Europe Facility program.

Reconstruction works will first be launched on Kaunas-Palemonas rail section, part of Rokai–Palemonas–Kaunas line. Works on Rokai–Palemonas will be carried out in several stages; Palemonas – Kaunas hydroelectric power plant (HPP) railway infrastructure reconstruction, reconstruction works of rail lines within Kaunas HPP, and Kaunas HPP–Rokai.

In 2015, Lithuania completed the construction of the 1 435 mm gauge line from the Polish border to Kaunas Central Station.
