The Government of FYR Macedonia and China South Locomotive & Rolling Stock Corporation (CSR) signed a contract for the delivery of 6 new MUs (4 DMU and 2 EMU). It is CSR’s first sale in Europe and Macedonia’s the first investment in rolling stock in 35 years.
The first train should reach Macedonian Railways next summer. It can carry up to 1200 passengers and features air-conditioning, vacuum toilet systems, energy efficient systems and facilitates access for passenger with reduced mobility.
For the MU project, Macedonian Railways allocated EUR 25 million, out of a EUR 50 million EBRD loan, including also the rehabilitation of three electric locomotives (10 million) and the acquisition of up to 150 new freight wagons (EUR 15 million).
Vice Prime Minister and Minister of finance of the Republic of Macedonia Zoran Stavreski stated that investments in railway sector in the next four years will reach EUR 250 million.
