A series of major rolling stock business and development projects was agreed at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF, 16-18 June 2016, Russia). In the framework of the event, Sinara Transport Machines (STM), Cuban Union Railways (UFC) and the Export Insurance Agency of Russia (EXIAR) have signed an agreement on the supply of locomotives, rail buses and equipment for the modernization of the Cuban Railways.
On the 10th of August 2016, the parties intend to sign a five-year contract for the delivery of 75 new locomotives to Cuba, for the provision of major repairs to the Russian-built locomotive fleet of Ferrocarriles de Cuba, as well as for the delivery of spare parts and equipment for the modernization of Cienaga depot in Havana city. EXIAR will assist in negotiations with the Russian credit institutions in order to finance the contract under its coverage. The agreement also includes the of supply rail buses to be used for suburban passenger transport. The contract amount will be approximately Eur 190 million.
General Electric (GE) and Transmashholding (TMH) have agreed to establish Penza diesel engines joint venture company at Penza (Russia), specialising in the production and maintenance of diesel engines. The agreement was signed by Andrei Bokarev, President of Transmashholding, and Ron Pollett, President and CEO of GE in Russia and CIS, in the framework of the same event.
The new JV will start activities in 2017. The engine production will be carried out at a newly built plant and will include GEVO diesel engines of 1600 kWh to 4,700 kWh capacity. In accordance with the approved business plan, Penza diesel engines will initially produce 250 diesel engine/year. The partners expect that the joint production will expand its offer of diesel engines, will provide high quality products and will also expand internationally.
Gazprom, Russian Railways, Sinara Group and Transmashholding have also signed an agreement on consolidation of efforts for using natural gas as a fuel for rolling stock. The parties intend to develop and implement an action plan for reaching their objectives. Sinara Group and Russian Railways plan to sign a long-term contract for the supply of natural gas fueled turbine-electric GT1h locomotives, to enter service on the non-electrified sections of Siberia and Northern railways. Gazprom and Russian Railways will decide on the construction of LNG infrastructure – charging stations for liquefied natural gas locomotives. RZD intends to adapt the industrial and technological base of its railway depots, to operate natural gas fueled rolling stock and to modernize Korotchaevo-Surgut-Voinovka rail section (Sverdlovsk Railway) for the operation of up to 9,000 tons trains.
Sinara Group is currently carrying out certification tests for its gas turbine GT1h locomotive manufactured by Sinara Transport Machines (STM), and is prepared to launch GT1h locomotive serial production. The vehicle has already run about 30,000 km under field tests on Egorshino – Alapaevsk section. According to Sinara, GT1h gas turbine locomotive hauling a 9000 tons train operated for 700 kilometers without refueling.
