MÁV-Start intends to soon announce the tender for 30 multiple units with a capacity of 300-600 passengers, which could also be double-deck trains, informs Magyar Idők. The procurement is a part of the government decision on Integrated Programme for Transport 2016 (IKOP) funding allocation. According to it, MÁV-Start can acquire 30 EMU for HUF 82.2 billion.
Ilona Dávid, president of MÁV, stated recently that an international tender allowing the participation of the widest range of rolling stock suppliers should be announced.
Alstom, Bombardier, Siemens and Stadler and other major rolling stock manufacturers are expected to express interest in the tender. According to the same publication, Staler’s FLIRT certification has expired and its successor FLIRT-3 has not yet been issued certification. However it could also will be a new situation since MÁV could probably order double-decker trains, and manufacturers have to supply such vehicles not yet certified in Hungary.
András Csépke, CEO of MÁV-Start, said recently that it was worth purchasing double-deck trains, the vehicle weight per seat is about twenty percent smaller and the lifetime cost is lower by fifty percent compared to the traditional vehicles, so their maintenance is cheaper. The increased capacity is the main argument in favor of the double-decker vehicles. MÁV-Start has to ensure 380-460 seats per vehicle in the suburban market during peak hours.
