Moscow Metro to exceed its 5oo km of lines objective next year

Moscow Metro will exceed its 5oo km of lines objective next year. According to Marat Khusnullin, Deputy Mayor for Urban Development and Construction, Moscow Metro objective to extend by 50% will be reached with the integration of the 54 km long Small Ring of the Moscow Railway scheduled to enter operations in 2016. Currently 70% of the construction project has been carried out.

In 2008, Moscow authorities and Russian Railways signed an agreement on the joint project Reconstruction and Development of the Small Ring of the Moscow Railway. The agreement stipulated the conversion of the cargo railway ring for passenger transport. The Small Ring is expected to transport up to 300 million passengers per year.

In 2011, the two organisations established a joint venture JSC Moscow Ring Railway (MKZD) to implement the  project. In september this year, The Russia Federal Antimonopoly Service allowed Moscow Metro to buy 50% of Moscow Ring Railway (MKZD).
