Prime Minister of the Republic of Turkey Recep Tayyip Erdoğan paid an official visit to Pakistan on December 23-24, 2013. On this occasion, Pakistan and Turkey pledged to intensify cooperation in energy, trade, urban development, infrastructure and housing sectors besides inking agreement to operationalise the Islamabad-Tehran-Istanbul ECO Container Train.
During the visit, “Project Agreement Between Punjab Industrial Department and Prime Ministry Turkish Cooperation And Coordination Agency of the Republic of Turkey, Memorandum of Understanding Between TOBB and Pakistan Railways” was signed. The objective is to contribute to overcoming the lack of strong logistics connections between the two countries and help raising the level of trade.
THE ECO TRAIN ON ISLAMABAD-TEHRAN-İSTANBUL ROUTE: KEY FACTS
• The Train covers a 6543 km journey: 1990 km in Pakistan, 2603 km in Iran and
1950 km in Turkey.
• The total duration of travel was initially planned for 14 days, but now it is
reduced to 10.5 days.
• More than 30% reduction in railway tariffs comparing with demonstration run
• Regular run started on 2nd August 2010.
