PKP CARGO and the National Centre for Research and Development (NCBR) have signed a cooperation agreement to jointly to invest PLN 30 million in new technologies for the rail transport. The partners will allocate PLN 15 million each for the project. The joint initiative focuses on the development of IT tools and logistics and operating process optimization systems and is based on the open innovation model, being addressed to the scientific units, universities and entrepreneurs.
“PKP CARGO owns more than 2000 locomotives and more than 60000 freight wagons. Everyday operation involves several thousand employees. With such comprehensive operation scale, any asset management optimizing solution is priceless”, said Wojciech Derda, Member of the Management in charge of Operations at PKP CARGO. “For example: the decrease of power consumption by only several percent translates into millions of savings. Therefore we believe that our investments in D&R will bring profits in short time perspective”, he added.
The co-operation with the NCBR is also to help gain innovative technologies for the design and construction of modern rolling stock to support the PKP CARGO’s independent production of freight cars by PKP CARGO, which has been planned for 2016 onwards. The company also wants to obtain solutions that increase the safety of their trains, goods and terminals.
The first competition will be announced in the first quarter of 2016.
