Polish rail infrastructure manager PKP Polish Railway Lines (PKP PLK) has launched a PLN 500m (EUR 112 million) tender for the modernisation of Częstochowa – Zawiercie rail section, the last segment of Line no 1 connecting Warsaw to Katowice (Wiedenki).
Modernisation works will include the replacement of track and catenary on the 44 km of line, installation of new turnouts and signaling systems. As part of the project, 20 bridges, 3 viaducts and culverts 7 will be upgraded. Passenger platforms in 10 railway stations and stops will also be reconstructed. Works are scheduled to be carried out between 2017- 2020. The upgrade will support increased train speeds uo to 160 km/h for passenger trains and 120 km/h for freight trains.
The project Works on the railway line No. 1, on the Częstochowa – Zawiercie section is part of the Railway National Programme and is financed under financed EU’s Operational Programme Infrastructure and Environment. Total investments in the entire rail Line 1 modernisation reach up to now PLN 3 bn.
