The national railways of Bulgaria and FYR Macedonia plan to intensify collaboration on the development of rail connections between the two countries. Macedonian Railway Infrastructure director Irfan Asani and Bulgarian National railway infrastructure company (NRIC) CEO Milcho Lambrevmet met last week in Skopje to discuss further collaborations and share on experience and expertise.
“If everything goes according to schedule, construction works on the rail line to Bulgaria should be completed by 2020, and finally Skopje and Sofia will be connected by rail”, said Asani.
According to Lambrev, NRIC is currently looks into new rail routes towards FYR Macedonia. “We will complete construction works by 2020 and we plan to use the old route, although we are working on the new route leading to the border with Macedonian”, said Lambrev.
The detailed designs of parts of the missing railway link between Skopje and the Bulgarian border was financed by the EU, with regard to Corridor VIII. Under IPA II funding, FYR Macedonia has been allocated EUR 108.9 million for 2014-2020 period for actions in the area of transport.
