Railways of Moldova and Ukraine to rebuild railway line bypassing Transnistria

Moldovan Railways (CFM) and Ukrzaliznytsya (UZ) have signed an agreement to rebuild the railway line connecting Berezina (Odessa) to Basarabeasca (Moldova) and to modernise Artsyz – Berezina railway section. Negotiations were initiated by the Odessa Regional State Administration.

In regarding Berezina-Basarabeasca railway line, Alexander Zavgorodnii UZ’s acting general director stated that the line is a direct connection from Moldova to Odessa Port and is important for Moldova since it bypasses Transnistria.

The companies will start looking for investors and works are scheduled to begin in the summer of 2016.

In 1999, due to lack of traffic and state of emergency on Brezina-Basarabeasca line about 20 kilometers of track on the territory of Ukraine (Odessa railway) and almost 1.5 km on the territory of Moldova were dismantled.

In addition, the participants agreed to initiate the opening of the international rail joint checkpoint at Berezina.
