Construction works for Timisoara’s first metro line could start this year, according to local authorities. The metro line will be 8 km long and will connect the city center to the airport. The project will be included in the 2014-2020 budget plan, however the funding source has not yet been made public.

The metro line will have five stations: North Railway Station (Gara de Nord), Iulius Mall, East Railway Station (Gara de Est), Zoo, International Airport, said Nicolae Robu, Mayor of Timisoara city.

The mayor informed that Timisoara Municipality conducted a technical, economic, aesthetic, functional analysis, and an urban development study, the conclusion being that the underground transport is the “best solution” for Timisoara’s public transport.
