Russian Railways (RZD) stopped purchasing foreign rails and began placing orders with the domestic suppliers EVRAZ and Mechel. The company previously committed to buy rails from Nippon Steel & Sumitomo Metal Corporation.
EVRAZ launched last year the mass production of head-hardened R65 DT-350 rails, with the first large delivery of 10000 tons of 25-meter rails shipped to RZD. Starting with 2009, EVRAZ invested in the modernization of ZSMK and Nizhny Tagil Metallurgical Plant rolling mills. The company can produce up to 950,000 tons of rails per year.
In 2013, RZD purchased 950,000 tons of rails (20% were imported) . This year, the railway monopoly plans to reduce purchases by 12% to 830,000 tonnes, informed the senior vice president of Russia Railways, Vadim Morozov. The company will order 100 000-130 000 tonnes of rails from Mechel, in the second half of 2014.
RZD plans to invest up 67% of funds (approximately RUB 800 bn) in modernising and developing rail infrastructure, up to 2016.
