The works to increase freight volumes on Trans-Siberian and BAM railways require an additional amount of 574 billion rubles (EUR 12bn). A large part of the amount 510.6 billion rubles will go to infrastructure works, while 45.7 billion rubles will be allocated for electrification works, 17.5 billion rubles for the installation traffic telematics system and 30 billion rubles for the upgrade of the locomotive fleet. However, the money is not part of the already approved program for the development of the Trans-Siberian and BAM, stated a representative of Russian Railways (RZD).
The additional investments are expected to increase the initial estimated traffic of 55 million tonnes per annum to 75 million tonnes. During a meeting of the government commission on transport that took place in May this year, the 75 million tonnes estimated traffic/year indicator was approved, but the project funding remained the same 562 billion rubles.
