Russian Railways posts increase in passenger numbers in 2016

rzd_russian_railwaysRussian Railways (RZD) transported 1.0371 billion passengers in 2016, an increase of 1.6% y.o.y. Long-distance passenger numbers amounted to 101.4 million, an increase of 3.6% on the previous year, while suburban commuters were up 1.4% to 935.7 million.

Passenger turnover on the Russian Railways’ network increased by 3.4% in 2016 compared to 2015 and amounted to 124.5 billion passenger-km. Long-distance passenger turnover increased 4.5% to 93.5 billion passenger-km, while suburban passenger turnover rose by 0.3% to 31 billion passenger-km.

According to the latest figures, the network owned by Russian Railways carried a total of 1.2223 billion tons of freight in 2016, 0.6% more than in 2015.

In 2016, the Russian Railways’ network loaded the following categories of freight. Figures in brackets show the percentage change compared to 2015:

  • coal – 328.6 m tons (+1.7%);
  • coke – 11.7 m tons (+5.5%);
  • oil and petroleum products – 235.8 m tons (-6.1%);
  • iron and manganese ores – 109.5 m tons (+0.5%);
  • ferrous metals – 71 m tons (-0.5%);
  • ferrous metal scrap – 15 m tons (+0.3%);
  • chemical and mineral fertilisers – 53.5 m tons (+4%);
  • cement – 26.7 m tons (-6.9%);
  • timber – 42.2 m tons (+6.9%);
  • grain – 19 m tons (+1.5%);
  • construction materials – 141 m tons (+7.9%);
  • non-ferrous ores and sulphur feedstock – 21.1 m tons (+3.1%);
  • chemicals and soda – 25.7 m tons (+2.6%);
  • industrial raw materials and moulded materials – 35 m tons (+0.3%).

Freight turnover in 2016 amounted to 2.3423 billion tariff ton-km, an increase of 1.6% compared to 2015. Freight turnover taking into account empty wagon runs amounted to 2.9976 trillion ton-km, up 1.4% on 2015.

According to the latest figures, the loading volume on the network of Russian Railways in December 2016 amounted to 105.2 m tons, 0.9% more than in December 2015.

Freight turnover in December 2016 increased by 2.9% compared to December 2015 and amounted to 208.2 billion tariff ton-km. Freight turnover taking into account empty wagon runs in December 2016 increased by 3.1% and amounted to 267 billion ton-km.
