Russian Railways and South Africa’s Transnet Ltd signed on Thursday a Memorandum of Understanding on cooperation.
The parties agreed to share information and experience in the railway sector, and expressed their interest to discuss the possible use of Russian-built locomotives, the modernization of railway infrastructure with the help of Russian experience, in order to increase travel speeds on South African railways, and to carry out joint research and development programmes.
According to Oleg Belozerov, President of Russian Railways, both two companies are diversified and have a lot in common. “For example, the majority of cargo is sent to the ports and there is a combined movement of freight and passenger trains. I am sure our cooperation will reach a new level and will provide additional opportunities” , said Belozerov.
