Slovakian national passenger operator ZSSK has launched a pilot project for the deployment of Wi-Fi technology in up to 20 passenger coaches servicing international routes. After the quality evaluation of the new technology in operation ZSSK plans to announce a tender for the installation of new Wi-Fi technology in other 200 railway passenger cars.
The implementation of the pilot project is carried out by the WDS Solutions company using Huawei Wi-Fi technology. Among the features of the new system in comparison to the old one (Draytek Vigor deployed by Slovak Telekom) are the increased number of usable SIM cards (8), the physical dimensions of the system (key feature for installation), high-availability of the internal hard drive to provide new services to the passengers (128 GB SSD, with the possibility of upgrade to 1TB), high-density Wi-Fi coverage, PoE support.
“In the near future we have to carry out the generational upgrade of Wi-Fi connectivity and to extend the Wi-Fi in hundreds of other wagons”, said Martin Stach, ZSSK Director of Information Technology.
According to ZSSK, Huawei’s solution is in operation in Spain and China, and negotiations are carried out for deployment in Poland and the Czech Republic.
