Slovenia’s National Assembly voted today in favor of amending the railway company act in order to allow the entry of a strategic partner SŽ Tovorni promet, the freight transport division of the Slovenian Railways. This amendment allows a maximum of up to 50 percent minus one share in the subsidiaries of SZ to be owned by a strategic partner.
The decision was taken considering the changes on the CEE railway freight market and Slovenian Railways strategy for 2020 to increase market share and improve financial results also by entering new railway markets.
In February 2016, Slovenian Railways and Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB) have signed a letter of intent to explore their options for intensified rail freight cooperation between the two countries. The partnership is planned to be launched in 2017 and it covers Hungary, Italy, and SE Europe markets. With this cooperation the transport time could be reduced and furthermore, the utilization of transport infrastructure, such as the rail network, ports and terminals would be improved and simplified. A detailed potential analysis including a due diligence will be executed during the first half of 2016 with the respective partners, national and EU bodies. An extension of the cooperation between Slovenian Railways and ÖBB that may contain a joint utilization of assets as well as a joint enterprise.
In 2003, Slovenian Railways started negotiations for a strategic partnership with Stinnes (Deutsche Bahn), however a final agreement was not reached.[the_ad_placement id=”post”]
