France Greater Besançon tramway project model for Romania’s Bistrita city

The Technical University of Cluj-Napoca – Bistrita branch and specialists for Bistrita Municipality are working on the investment opportunity study for the project “Public Transport “Green Line” using traction motor vehicles”.

Having as inspiration source the  Greater Besançon Tramway project in France, local authorities plan to invest approximately EUR 20 million in the construction and operation of a 15 km long tramway line, connecting Viişoara and Unirea towns, via the historic center of Bistrita city. The 2014 local budget provided for EUR 74468  for the project design.

Recently, Bistrita Municipality organised a public consultation in order to find out the citizens’ preferred options in terms of public transportation. “The goal of this endeavour is to find out how people see transportation in Bistrita, how things should change in the near future and on medium and long term,” stated Mihai Rusti, Bistrita Municipality representative.

Though it was expected that the main reluctance to be related to the effects of the tramway noise and vibration on the city center buildings, authorities found out that actually Bistrita inhabitants who took part at the consultation considered as issue the selected route, since Viisoara also includes a large Roma community.

Bistrita aims to implement the green tramway project under Regional Operational Programme funding.
