Ukrainian Ministry of Infrastructure waiting for stabilisation before continuing discussions on Skoda Transportation – Zaporizhia Electric Locomotive Repair Plant JV

The discussions on Skoda Transportation – Zaporizhia Electric Locomotive Repair Plant Joint Venture project will continue after regaining political and economic stability of the country, declared Maxim Bourbaki, Ukrainian Minister of Infrastructure.

Under the program for the updating of the locomotive fleet, State Railways Administration Ukrzaliznytsia cooperates with Skoda Transportation (Czech Republic) in the organization of production of modern electric locomotives in Zaporizhzhya (investments in construction and production equipment will be over UAH 1 billion).

Within the joint project with the Skoda Transportation company, it is planned to manufacture 480 electric locomotives: 50 double-system passenger locomotives (trains can run on dual voltage – AC 25 kV 50 Hz and DC 3 kV), 330 single-system passenger locomotives and 100 double-system cargo locomotives. The planned level of industrial localization should reach 90%: the locomotives will be almost completely equipped by domestically produced industrial products. The experts say that the very first electric locomotives will use parts made by ten Ukrainian railway manufacturers.

The Minister also stated that future rolling stock acquisition will involve local manufacturers. In terms of financial mechanisms for upgrading the rolling stock or purchasing new rolling stock, both leases and borrowings will be considered.
