“Today, summing up the operational results of Ulaanbaatar Railway, we see that an important step was made in 2012 towards the company’s development, strengthening its market position, adopting important strategic documents, defining the railway’s role for a long-term prospect,” declared Vadim Morozov, First Vice President at RZD and Chairman of the Board of Ulaanbaatar Railway.
The total rail freight transportation volume by 2015 is estimated at 34.1 million tons per annum, and by 2020 at 45.1 million tons, an increase by 2.2 times in comparison with 2012. The analysts took into account the transportation of cargo from iron-ore deposits Tumurtei and Bargilt, and the Tavan-Tolgoi coal deposit, including exports via the Sukhe-Bator – Naushki and Dzmyn-Ude – Erlyan border crossings.
For ensuring transportation for the estimated freight flows, it is planned to equip 1,111 km long sections with automatic interlocking, to construct 15 km of additional main tracks, and to build and reconstruct 27 rail crossing loops.
Vadim Morozov also stated that the key performance indicators of Ulaanbaatar Railway significantly improved since 2009: the company registered stable growth cargo volumes and increased its turnover.
In 2013, with the participation of RZD, the volume of cargo transportation via Ulaanbaatar Railway reached 21 million tons, he highest tonnage transported in the company’s history.
