More urban rail projects for Istanbul

uskudar1The urban rail network of Istanbul will reach 489 km in 2019 and could more than double after 2023, stated Kadir Topbaş, Mayor of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality, at the tunnel completion ceremony for Mecidiyeköy – Tekstilkent metro line section, part of Kabataş – Mecidiyeköy – Mahmutbey line (M7). “We are talking about 1000 kilometers of rail lines. In the future, we will be known for the metro”, Topbaş said. “We will make Istanbul the city with the world’s longest rail system.  Istanbul is worthy of this “, he added.

The new 24.5 km-long M7 with 19 stations will be opened in late 2018 and is expected to transport 1 million passengers a day. The value of the construction works reaches TRY 3.7 bn (EUR 957 million). This metro line will serve with eight districts (Beyoğlu, Beşiktaş, Şişli, Kağıthane, Bağcılar, Eyüp, Gaziosmanpaşa and Esenler). Hyundai Rotem was awarded a contract last year for supplying 75 four-car driverless trainsets. For the first time in Istanbul metro these the metro cars will have LCD Active Route Maps on the doors, mobile phone charger units and will allow easy access for passengers with physical disabilities.

According to Topbaş,  since 2004 Istanbul invested TRY 98.5 bn, expanding the urban rail network from just 45,1 km to 149,95 km in the present and 151 km of metro lines in construction. Today approximately 3 million people in Istanbul are using the rail system. The goal is to have 11 million people using the rail system in 2019.

Topbas also informed that the first section of Üsküdar-Ümraniye-Çekmeköy metro line will be opened in May, and the second section up to Çekmeköy in August.

Construction for Dudullu-Bostancı metro line is ongoing, with works launched in February 2016. The metro line will be 14 km long and will have 13 stations. The line is planned to be open in 2019.
