The world’s first hydrogen fuel cell powered fixed rail electric tram was presented at a ceremonial event held in March at the head office, production and testing facility of the Chinese rolling stock manufacturer CSR Qingdao Sifang Company (CSR Sifang), based in Qingdao, Shandong province. Ballard’s FCvelocity® fuel cell module is integrated into the low floor tram design.
The three-car tramway runs on hydrogen power via onboard fuel cells and refueling takes three minutes. The vehicle has a capacity of 380 passengers and can run for about 100 kilometers, at a top speed of around 70 km/h.
